Why the company was started: The Indian Tea industry is responsible for 25%-30% of the world's tea production and is the second largest employer of organized labor in India. But sadly, the industry is forced to be reliant on bulk tea exports to foreign brands who add no real value to the home industry. This also impacts the millions of farmers who continue to struggle with poor wages and an uncertain future. Most of this tea shuffles for months at end between unnecessary middlemen and sits in unregulated warehouses, before reaching the consumer. By this time, most of the tea's flavor and character is lost. Evidently, this obsolete supply chain, followed by conventional tea brands doesn't benefit the consumer, neither the farmers, nor the industry. As a solution to the above problem, Bala launched Vahdam Teas. A home-grown industry that sources premium tea from reputed plantations within hours of harvest, without the involvement of any middlemen. The sourced tea is brought to the company's state-of-the-art tea facility in Delhi, India, where further value is added to the product. The final produce is packed into vacuum-sealed retail boxes and shipped to our global distribution facilities, from where it reaches the consumer in the shortest time possible. Owing to this revolutionary supply chain, most of the earnings are retained in the source regions where it brings the farmers a better price for their efforts and also helps in strengthening the enfeebling industry.
How does the company give back: The brand's motto of 'Do Good by Doing Good' reflects first in its revolutionary supply chain. Our supply chain is devoid of any middlemen like auctioneers, distributors, retailers etc. These middlemen in the traditional sourcing method skim most of the profits before it reaches the farmer. But through our supply chain, premium teas from reputed gardens reach the consumers directly. This helps in retaining most of the earnings in the region itself, where it helps the farmers fetch a better price for their efforts, empowering them in the long run. Additionally, the brand launched its first social initiative - 'TEAch Me' in 2018. Under this initiative, 1% of the company's revenue goes towards the education of our tea farmers' children. The program has already inducted the wards of all the farmers at two of our partnering tea estates in India. Like any other parent, every farmer wishes for their progeny to have a better life than they had. We, as a humble brand, simply wish to honor this aspiration.
