DIY Lip Butter

Thanks so much for the support the last few days! We have had a blast here in Vegas, where yesterday we shot for our book! I'm so excited to share this journey with you and cannot thank you enough for the love. Today Lauren's going to share a cool DIY Lip Butter project. Hope you enjoy. xo Candace

PSA: We're almost sold out of our YBC Mantra Boxes, so snag yours now while you still can!

If you were one of the lucky ybc’ers to have ordered the special edition holiday mantra box before it sold out then you're probably already familiar with a lavender lip butter that Soulful Essence included in the latest shipment (place your order for our spring box here before it sells out!) But what you guys didn’t get were the full do-it-yourself kits that actually create the finished product that showed up on your doorstep.

We at YBC HQ however, were lucky enough to receive the full DIY kit; I was particularly excited when it showed up because I recently made the move to Colorado this past Spring and It’s my first time experiencing this type of winter weather; a really dry cold at a moderately high elevation (6,035 ft. to be exact). I have really dry skin to begin with - I mean, I blow through lotion and lip balm in the warmer months, so I knew I was in for it when I moved out here.

Actually, I think I'll let you guys in on one of my flaws because lets be honest, we all have them right? Plus, it kind of ties my story together ;) haha. So, I have the WORST scatter brain when it comes to making sure I have everything together before leaving the house in the morning or taking off from the office at the end of the day - just ask Candace. I'm always leaving something behind haha. Oh - could be a good goal for 2016! Anyway, the biggest thing I'm always leave behind is lip balm - whether it’s left in coat pocket, in my gym bag, in my make-up bag, in my car….at the office (haha) and nothing makes me more anxious than needing chapstick and not having ANYTHING on hand - it’s actually slightly tortuous. That being said, you can only imagine how pumped I was to see that this bad boy come with enough stuff to make 4 lip butters (!!!)  - I’m literally never stuck without one. It’s a godsend, really.

No really, it kind of is because Soulful Essence actually partnered up with Friends of the Earth (ring a bell? you may remember me talking about them in my save the bees series) to donate a portion of each sale of the lavender lip butter diy kit to help save the bees. If you’re interested, you can read more about how she got involved with FOE after being inspired by our Mission: Save the Bees series here.

Anyway, you guys know how much I love myself a good DIY project so I thought it would be fun to share with how easy it is to make your own lip butters at home while at the same time contributing to FOE’s mission to save the bees. yay!

What you’ll need:

  • Lip Butter Kit
  • Medium Sauce Pan *to create a double boiler
  • Smaller glass bowl or measuring cup *to create a double boiler
Step one - double boiler

First, fill the sauce pan about ¾ of the way - place your small glass cup inside the pot and warm over medium heat. You don’t want to reach the boiling point so keep a constant eye on the heat level. Take the small beeswax rectangle along with the contents of the packet marked ‘organic shea butter’ and combine everything in the glass cup, stirring occasionally until fully melted.
