Yoga Tip: Twists in the Yoga Practice

Click on the picture above to watch the video!

Had a moment (or two, or three) of frustration with youtube, but I got around my frustration by creating a clickable picture above that will take you directly to the video. Alternatively, you can just click here. The video is about 3 minutes and explains the benefits of twists in the yoga practice, and gives a number of different ways you can incorporate twists into your own sequence. Hope you enjoy.

PS: A breakfast cookie recipe, a fascinating read about competitive yoga and Bikram, and a morning yoga practice to start your day off right.

On Backbends and Inversions

Backbends and inversions can seem intimidating, but the benefits of both are so great that I urge you to give them a try. Choose a pose appropriate for where you are in your practice. You can make use of the wall or a block to help you out. I made a short video for tips and inspiration.

Inversion Benefits

Whether it's a passive pose like legs up the wall or a more physical pose like headstand, inversions improve circulation, alleviate anxiety, relieve back pain, improve digestion, and help insomnia.  Note: Menstruating women and people with high blood pressure should not do inversions.

Backbend Benefits

Backbends are invigorating and help to energize the body. They stimulate circulation, loosen up the joints, release natural pain killers, relieve tension and boost energy levels. Great to do if you're feeling a little tired!

I hope this video helps to inspire someone to try an inversion or backbend. If you decide to give it a go, snap a pic and send it to me on twitter or on Facebook so I can put you in the facebook album "Yoga Everywhere"!

PS- A favorite quote, meditation for beginners, and some yoga chair poses.

Yoga Tip: Yoga for the Holidays 4

One of the not-so-awesome things about YouTube is even if I choose a specific thumbnail, it seems to display whatever thumbnail it feels like. So if the thumbnail above is me in what looks like the worst plank position ever, then this is a good example of what not to do. ;) (I was in transition, I swear!) Anyway, here's a 5 minute vinyasa flow to add to the Yoga for the Holidays series that will get your heart pumping and quiet the mind. It features crow jumpbacks which are a little on the advanced side. If you've never done crow before, please either skip it, or work on crow first by following this video (instruction starts at the 45 second mark). Not to scare you, but my yoga instructor broke her nose when she face planted out of crow, so truly, be mindful of where you are in your practice. If you're relatively new to crow, use a pillow underneath your face. Other than that, get to it and let me know how it worked out for you. Have a wonderful weekend.

Bloops and Laughs

Happy day after Thanksgiving from Germany! Hope you had a wonderful day.

Today I'm here with some videos to make you smile. The first, a rap song about yoga girls. Fair warning: it will probably get stuck in your head. I love it when you call me big Baba. What?

Usually on Fridays I do Yoga Tip posts that give you a quick routine or show you poses you can do. Today I'm feeling under the weather, so instead of filming or taking pics, I put together a blooper reel. It documents the trials and tribulations of making youtube yoga videos. My dog runs around like he owns the place, phones are going off, we've got serious lighting issues, wardrobe malfunctions, me falling over- it's a good time had by none. :) Next week we'll be back to our regularly scheduled program of yoga tips on Friday.

PS-If you have any yoga questions, or would like to see a post about something specific, feel free to comment or send me a message on twitter or facebook. Have a mahhvelous weekend.

(Less than) 5 Minute Abs

Confession: I don't love doing abdominal work. (Does anyone?) But I have found that since working on my abs a bit more in recent weeks, I've been finding ease in certain yoga poses like plank and balancing asanas. If you're a runner, having strong abs will help to stabilize your pelvis and torso as you run and help with posture. Now, I don't know about you, but if i haven't been working on abs lately the last thing I want is a long video. I like to start small. So here's a (less than) 5 minute ab video I made this morning. Hope you enjoy.

PS- The deadline to register for our Yoga and Zumba Girls' Getaway Weekend is October 10th. We'd love to have you, so if you're down to meet us in Prague, send in your registration! More info here.
