A doula-wha?!
Read MoreIt's difficult to make smart food choices when you're on vacation, but it can be done with a little preparation. This isn't to say you shouldn't indulge at all- you definitely should- but maybe indulge once a day instead every meal of the vacation. ;)
1. Bring snacks
Packing a couple healthy snacks will curb road trip cravings when your only options are gas station snacks. We brought raw bars, mixed nuts and some fruit for our trip to Amsterdam.
2. Research restaurants
I have the worst luck trying to find a decent restaurant when I'm hungry. Fast food restaurants will spring up everywhere, but any place serving something halfway nutritious will be no where to be found. Try to make a list of a few restaurants ahead of time that serve healthy options you know you'll like, and make it a point to get there.
3. Check your drink
Avoid sugary drinks like soda which will give you a quick burst of energy before a total crash. Instead, choose water or tea which will hydrate you better. If you choose to drink alcohol, always choose something simple and relatively plain. A margarita, for instance, has 740 calories and 56g carbs while a gin and tonic has 200 calories and 14g carbs.
I feel like my meals have been so boring this past week because I've honestly been making that granola and eating it throughout the day with little variety. (Did any of you make it? I'd love to know if you liked it, or if you added something else that made it even better!) Here are the few meals I did eat besides the granola (and a juicy burger and fries last Saturday night, oh boy). Clockwise from top left: An egg/cheese/zucchini/pepper omelet gone wrong (apologies to my high school life skills teacher), salad with cucumber/cranberries/peppers/chicken, wild salmon with zucchini and tabbouleh, and a flax wrap with veggie burger, broccoli, beans and avocado.
Any special meals you've eaten this week you'd like to share? Leave a comment here or share the picture on our Facebook page!
Apologies for the lack of posts lately. I moved to Germany and it took a few weeks to get our internet up a running. Now that I'm back on the grid the blog will be back to its regularly scheduled program. :)
Anyway, here is a quick look at what I've made/eaten in the past few weeks. I find that I'm gravitating more towards a vegetarian diet once again. When it comes to what diet to follow I think it's just best to go with what you feel good eating, and avoid depriving yourself of anything you crave. Lately, I just don't want to eat meat, so I don't (for now).* So do what feels good, right?
Clockwise from top left we have: a vegetarian curry dish featuring a favorite love of mine- fried plantains, then an easy breakfast of 3 eggs, 1 egg white and mashed avocado on flax toast. Up next there's broccoli, kidney beans, carrots and zucchini tossed in basmati rice, and lastly a fresh fruit salad for breakfast with juicy blueberries, strawberries and some green apple bits.
What have you been eating lately?
*This post was written a few days ago. Last night I made salmon for dinner. And had chicken the night before. So maybe I'm eating meat once again?
Spending the summer in the Florida heat has found me drinking more water than ever before. I know it's a good thing, but sometimes I find it so hard to remember to drink. The other day, I stumbled upon this water info on a friend's facebook page and thought it was great motivation to keep hydrated throughout the day.
I'm always in awe of people who drink a ton of water- I mean, it's such a commitment to carry around some sort of water bottle and sip sip sip all day, no?
I used to drink maybe a liter and a half per day when I was living in Germany. Now, a typical day for me in Florida is two and a half liters.
I really do feel that water affects me both mentally and physically. If I don't get my normal intake, I find I'm irritable, tired, and often tend to eat more. When I do get my normal amount, or if I drink more than usual, I have a sense of mental clarity and feel I have a lot of energy.
Aside from plain water, I usually drink two cups of Kava tea. (I highly recommend it for relaxation and the craziest, most vivid dreams ever. Plus each little packet comes with an inspirational saying, so, there's that.)
Anyway. I'm interested. How much water do you drink per day? Do you notice a difference when you don't get as much water as usual?
What do those stickers on fruit mean?
{Via}
Well here's something. You know those annoying stickers they put on fruit? Apparently they contain important info. If you care about where your fruit comes from- get a pen and paper.
If the code on the sticker...
has 4 numbers - it is a conventionally grown fruit (pesticides used)
has 5 numbers beginning with the number 8 - organic or not, it was genetically modified
has 5 numbers beginning with the number 9 - you've got yourself an organically grown fruit that was not genetically modified.
